Negative numbers

Negative numbers lie to the left of zero on the number line. You use them for temperatures below zero, debts and floors below ground.

Lower secondary (years 1-2)Ages 11 to 13Draft: Not yet checked by a maths teacher.

Why

At night it is 4 degrees below freezing in Uccle. During the day it gets 6 degrees warmer. How warm is it then?

With numbers that start at zero you cannot say how cold it is when it freezes. You need numbers that go below zero.

Four degrees below zero is written −4 °C. Six degrees warmer is six steps up: from −4 to −3, −2, −1, 0, 1 and 2. So it is 2 °C.
