The circle

The circumference of every circle is a little more than three times its diameter: that number is called π. With it you work out the circumference and area of anything round.

Year 6 of primary and lower secondary (years 1-2)Ages 11 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a maths teacher.

Why

How far does your bike go when the wheel turns all the way round once?

For a rectangle you simply add up the sides. A circle has no straight sides, so a ruler will not get you far.

Still, there is a fixed rule inside it. Whether you take a beer mat, a pizza or a wheel: the circumference is always about 3.14 times the diameter.
