Perimeter and area
The perimeter is the length of the edge around a shape, in metres. The area is how much space lies inside it, in square metres.

Why
You want a new floor and new skirting boards in your room. How much do you need to buy?
For the skirting boards you need the length of the edge: the perimeter. For the floor you need how much space there is: the area.
Mix the two up and you come home from the shop with far too much or far too little. That is why it pays to keep them apart.
