Mean, median and mode

Three ways to say with a single number what is typical in a set of data: the mean, the middle value and the value that appears most often.

Year 6 of primary and first stage of secondary schoolAges 11 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a maths teacher.

Why

You scored 12, 14, 9 and 17 out of 20 on your maths tests. How well are you actually doing?

A row of marks says a lot, but it is hard to take it all in at once. You want one number that tells you how things stand in general.

There are three different answers to that, and each one is useful at a different moment. A single outlier, such as a test that went badly, can change one of the numbers a lot and the other hardly at all.
