Ratios and proportion

A ratio compares two quantities. For directly proportional quantities the quotient stays the same, for inversely proportional ones the product does.

Why

The pancake recipe is for 4 people, but you are expecting 10. How much flour do you need?

Doubling everything is easy, but 10 is not a multiple of 4. Still, it should taste the same: the amounts have to stay in the same ratio.

With a ratio table you work out every amount via one person, or via a clever step in between, without guessing.
