Linear functions

A linear function y=ax+b gives a straight line. b is where you start on the y-axis, a is how much y changes per step in x.

Middle secondary (years 3-4)Ages 13 to 16Draft: Not yet checked by a maths teacher.

Why

Two phone plans: one is cheap per month but expensive per GB, the other the other way round. Which do you choose?

The answer depends on how much data you use. Each plan comes with a rule: a fixed amount plus an amount per GB.

A rule like that is a linear function. Draw both as straight lines and you see at once where they cross and from when one is better value.
